Gambia Police Force Cooperative Credit Union (GPFCCU), Saturday held 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the theme: Credit union promoting a financial inclusive society in The Gambia.
AGM was held at the National Association of Cooperative Credit Union of The Gambia (NACCUG) in Bakau.
Omar Fofana, the vice chairman of GPFCCU said they aim to create a financial institution that have the potential to cater for the diverse needs of our members, saying our objective is to broaden the activities to ensure that the unbanked, the poor and marginalised people of the society have access to financial services.
He also stated that they will make improvement in their future plans, especially in the creation of a new branch in Jangjanbureh, Central River Region (CRR) where the board will continue to invest in well trained staff that has the required skills to execute their task.
“We will train at least 500 members which is part of our strategic plan before the end of the coming three years. It is paramount to have highly qualified and well equipped staff in order to surmount the challenges we are facing as an organisation.”
Mr. Fofana said they will continue to solidify their role as a player in the microfinance industry in The Gambia and the financial market at large through their norms and values accompanied by their passion in the service.
Foday Sanyang, General Manager National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions of The Gambia (NACCUG) highlights their new strategy which, he said will enable them to redirect their focus on financial inclusion especially for women and youth to ensure and enhance their economic independence and empowerment.
Mr. Sanyang appealed to members to take the opportunity provided by the union seriously; saying to achieve that, NACCUG has created a special training to overcome the challenges confronted in their daily operations.
Abba Sankareh, register of cooperatives at NACCUG said as custodian of the credit unions, his office is mandated to monitor and supervise the activities of the credit union and to regular the fundamental requirements in financial auditing.
Demba Sowe, Assistant Inspector General of Police said the credit union will continue to render good service to members whose financial situation need urgent attention and suggested for the police credit union to decentralise their services in other regions to enable members in those areas to access their needs to establish efficiency in service delivery and build strong customer staff relations.
Assan Tangara, Permanent Secretary at the ministry of Interior outlined the successful effort of the union over the past years. He said successes were propelled by the rapid growth in their activities.
